The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) on Saturday, 24 May 2025 held a debate and Q&A competition focused on water conservation to facilitate the exchange of ideas, expand knowledge, and enhance skills in this important area.

This event was part of NAWEC’s ongoing public education initiative aimed at promoting responsible water use, particularly among younger generations.

The competition featured students from various schools who showcased their understanding, creativity, and commitment to sustainable water practices through drama, poetry, artwork, and debate.

During the event, Omar Sanneh, head of the Water and Sewerage Business Unit (WSBU), emphasised that water is one of the planet’s most precious and finite resources, essential for human survival, economic development, and environmental sustainability.

He stated: “In The Gambia, while a significant percentage of households have access to safe drinking water, challenges remain in ensuring consistent availability and quality. This he said, highlights the urgency of water conservation, which is not just a necessity but a collective responsibility.”

Mr. Sanneh pointed out that conserving water would alleviate pressure on natural resources, mitigate the effects of climate change, and ensure that future generations have access to clean and safe water.

Buba Badjie, deputy public relations officer of NAWEC, discussed the vital role water plays in people’s lives.

“Water is life. However, many communities worldwide, including our own, are already experiencing the effects of water scarcity, driven by climate change, population growth, and wasteful habits,” he said.

Mr. Badjie underscored that consistent actions such as turning off taps, fixing leaks, and harvesting rainwater could lead to significant and lasting change.

Special Guest Haddy Njie, PIU Coordinator and Tamsir Sawaneh, head of the Campaign Team, and Gallo Saidy, managing director of NAWEC, discussed the benefits and the necessity of consistent availability of water.

The event was attended by senior government officials, educational stakeholders, development partners, and NAWEC representatives who came to support and celebrate these young champions of conservation.
