The diplomatic mission seeks to carry the strength of a millenary tradition of service to the sick, the vulnerable and the forgotten.
In his opening remarks, His Excellency, Domenico Giani, the new ambassador of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta to The Gambia, extended his country’s gratitude to President Adama Barrow and the Foreign Affairs minister for the warm welcome and support provided at the start of the new diplomatic and humanitarian mission.
“We are a small embassy, yet we carry the strength of a millenary tradition of service to the sick, the vulnerable, and the forgotten,” he indicated.
“In this beautiful country, our mission is to offer support with generosity and comprehension that have always define the Order of Malta’s work across the world.”
He said that the opening of the embassy in Banjul coincides with the beginning of the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV, whose first words “profoundly inspire our commitment.”
The code reads that: "I wish that this greeting of peace may enter your hearts, reach your families, all people and nations… The peace of the Risen Christ is a disarmed and disarming peace; humble and persevering. It comes from God who loves us all unconditionally."
Ambassador Giani further revealed that it’s with the spirit of humble peace, bridge-building, and service that the Order of Malta renew its commitment to the people of The Gambia.
He extended his sincere thanks and appreciations to all the civil and institutional authorities who have accompanied this important step.
He also applauded H.E. Archbishop Walter Erbi, Apostolic Nuncio, the Diplomatic Corps accredited in The Gambia, representatives of international organisations, to H.E. Bishop Gabriel Mendy, Bishop of the Diocese of Banjul.
He equally thanked all religious leaders, the Muslim Community of Banjul led by the Imam Ratib of Banjul, Alh. Cherno Alieu Mass Kah and all those who work daily for dialogue and peace.
