Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow highlighted the transformation of the judicial training institute into a facility for the Special Criminal Division. He emphasised the importance of accountability for past crimes and ensuring justice is served to maintain community trust and prevent crime.
The Chief Justice thanked the UK government and High Commissioner for their support in capacity building and infrastructure development.
The Solicitor General and legal secretary of The Gambia, Hussein Thomasi, highlighted the Special Criminal Division's role in addressing serious crimes, improving efficiency, and boosting public confidence in justice. "This development reflects The Gambia's commitment to accountability and justice for past human rights violations".
He indicated that the division aligns with international standards and showcases The Gambia's approach to post-authoritarian transitional justice. Challenges include sustaining such mechanisms without undermining independence.
Nenneh M.C. Cham, the President of the Gambia Bar Association (GBA) highlighted the Special Criminal Division's role in efficiently prosecuting TRRC-related cases and strengthening accountability.
She expressed that TRRC recommendation is to prosecute individuals responsible for human rights abuses (1994-2017).
She added that that the division’s purpose is to handle serious crimes, work with potential internationalised court. She thanked the Chief Justice, contractors, and teams involved.
The British High Commissioner to The Gambia Ms. Harriet King, explained the Special Criminal Division's role in delivering justice for TRRC-documented violations, including SGBV.
She said the United Kingdom (UK) supported the division's establishment, focusing on effective trials for serious and complex cases.
According to her, the UK reaffirmed its commitment to partnership, recognising the rule of law as key to stability and development.
