Hon. Abdoulie Ceesay, the National Assembly Member (NAM) for Old Yundum Constituency and deputy majority leader in the National Assembly has emphasised the urgent need for a pedestrian flyover on the newly constructed OIC road.

This call to action comes in response to a rise in accidents, posing significant risks to pedestrians, students, women, and hawkers who must cross the busy thoroughfare daily.

In a recent chat with The Point, Hon. Ceesay indicated that he recognises the importance of the OIC Road's infrastructure upgrade for his constituency.  However, he added that the absence of a safe pedestrian passage remains a critical issue.

“Over recent months, the community has witnessed a troubling increase in accidents, some tragically resulting in fatalities. The need for a flyover is not merely a matter of convenience but one of life and death,” he stated.

Ceesay explained that the road undoubtedly improves connectivity and transportation within the constituency, yet it also brings new challenges. Pedestrians, especially students face daily dangers as they navigate through heavy traffic to reach their schools, he observed.

The current situation of the road, he said  increases the risk of accidents, causing fear and concern among parents and community members.

“Women and hawkers whose livelihoods depend on foot traffic are also adversely affected. The fear of crossing the road deters them, leading to economic hardships and reduced opportunities. A pedestrian flyover provides a safe, efficient passage, allowing them to move freely and securely,” he said.

Hon. Ceesay also called for the government's intervention to construct a pedestrian flyover on the OIC Road, saying this addition would not only enhance the road's functionality but also demonstrate government's commitment to its citizens' welfare and serve as a symbol of progress, prioritising safety and convenience for the community.

In addition to this appeal, Hon. Ceesay also advised drivers to adhere to traffic rules, drive safely, and avoid speeding. As he wisely notes, "The life you save may be your own."
