The deputy commissioner general and head of Domestic Tax at the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), Essa Jallow, has disclosed that the level of tax compliant has significantly increased over the years despite global deadly coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic that affected revenue collection in major sectors in The Gambia and beyond.

According to Mr. Jallow, the level of tax compliance has yielded positively in the performance of revenue collection of the GRA.

He affirmed that GRA has over the years registered unprecedented revenue performance. He said this is due to the level of voluntary tax compliance from individuals and companies. He said every single revenue collected matters to GRA.

He cited that GRA has been doing relatively well in meeting its annual revenue target as tasked by the government.  The GRA DCG lavished praise on all tax compliant companies and individuals in helping GRA attain its annual revenue target. He also hailed the media for playing a very cardinal role in educating and sensitising the general public on the relevance of paying tax.

He asserted that during 2020 where the global pandemic created a lot of lapses, GRA was able to achieve its revenue target.

He said despite increase in the annual revenue target, GRA will maintain its steadfastness to ensure that they collect the much needed revenue for government.

He seized the opportunity to advise all and sundry to respect the laws of the land particularly the revenue laws, saying they are the lifeline or blood of the country. He explained that GRA is implementing its activities within its mandate; adding the wish of GRA is not to take legal action against anyone.

He thus urged people to understand that it is through tax collection that the government provides social amenities and pays salaries among others.

He therefore said collection of revenue or payment of taxes cannot be ignored and urged people to respect the revenue laws.

He equally extolled the firm commitment and professionalism of the staff of GRA in doing due diligence to their work. He further assured that GRA would continue to register unprecedented revenue performance, while commending the GRA board and management for the leadership and guidance provided to the staff; which he said enabled them maximise revenue performance.

He finally pointed out that collecting D13.5 billion revenue in 2022 was challenging, but notes that GRA would do every effort to meet this target to enable government finance some of its key development projects.
