The event showcased the project plan for the forthcoming Sanyang Deep-Sea Port expansion as part of the GPA’s concession expansion project.
The three-day event began with a technical site visit, followed by an international conference to officially launch the sessions, and concluded with an exhibition aimed at fostering networking and collaboration among delegates.
In his opening remarks, Vice President Muhammeh B.S. Jallow welcomed delegates and commended the facilitators for organising what he described as one of Africa’s largest international conferences.
“On behalf of His Excellency President Adama Barrow, it is my pleasure to welcome all distinguished participants and expert speakers to this significant event—the 32nd Intermodal Africa Exhibition and Conference, hosted here in The Gambia, the Smiling Coast of Africa,” he said. “This conference, organized by the Gambia Ports Authority in collaboration with Transport Events International, is the largest international gathering of maritime transport service providers and logistics experts this year. It underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing global maritime challenges and opportunities.”
Vice President Jallow highlighted that the conference aligns with Goal 6 of Africa Agenda 2063, which focuses on promoting trade and transport as a means to unlock the continent’s immense potential in global commerce.
GPA Managing Director Ousman Jobarteh emphasised the importance of the concession expansion project with the Albayrak Group, describing it as a milestone for the authority. “Ports are catalysts for socio-economic development in any country,” he said, adding that GPA’s role in hosting this event highlights its pivotal contribution to the maritime sector.
Dr Rory James Doyle, Managing Director of Transport Events International, expressed his gratitude to the GPA for leading the event and applauded the remarkable developments observed at the Banjul Port during the technical site visit. He noted that 170 delegates attended the conference and expressed optimism that the GPA’s next hosting of the 38th Intermodal Africa Conference in six years would bring further revenue, investment, and development to The Gambia.
