Gov’t maintains State of Public Emergency

Banjul, The Gambia — In exercise of the powers vested in him by section 34(6) of the 1997 Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency President Adama Barrow declares that a state of public emergency continues to exist in the whole of The Gambia.

This further declaration shall last for a period of twenty-one days pursuant to section 34(2), with effect from today 10th June 2020.

Therefore, all the Emergency Regulations issued under the Emergency Powers Act shall continue to apply during the period of the state of public emergency.

During a presentation on Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) quarterly media briefing on Friday 23 July 2021 at the central medical store in Kotu, Seyfo Singateh, the senior programme officer, NCD, revealed that in 2018 Gambia had recorded 16,000 deaths on NCDs.

Kumba Sanyang (not her real name) was just 22 when she was picked up by PIU in May 2016. She spent 11 days in PIU detention while on trial. While in custody, her body suffered violations ranging from consistent buttocks slapping by men at the barracks to beatings with hosepipe, and making her clean the entire barracks, sweep the campus environment and wash their bowls every morning.
