GOV’t confirms recall of diplomats

Mar 4, 2024, 11:02 AM

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad of the Republic of The Gambia has in a press release confirmed the decision of the Government of The Gambia to recall H.E Ambassador Sheikh Tijan Hydara and the Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Vincent Mendy from their respective positions at the Gambian Embassy in Havana, Cuba. “These recalls take effect immediately,” added the release.

According to the release, “The two diplomats have been involved in an unfortunate incident at their duty station in Cuba and initial findings and available evidence confirmed that their actions are inconsistent with diplomatic norms. Consequently, they have both lost the integrity and privilege to continue representing The Gambia as diplomats. When a diplomat involves him or herself in certain acts, behaviours or is found to be in breach of the diplomatic code of conduct, the State's first course of action is disciplinary.”

“Furthermore, in an effort to understand not only the incident but also the overall operations of the Embassy in Havana, The Gambia Government has deployed a fact-finding mission to Cuba. The aim of this mission is to ensure that measures are put in place to prevent future occurrences of this nature and also ensure the irregularities of the operations of The Embassy in Cuba are normalised and in line with the diplomatic code of conduct. As the investigations progress, further information will be provided,” the release
also said.

“Finally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to reassure Gambians of its commitment to ensuring that diplomats who represent the country conform to the required behaviour, norms and practices for positions of their calibre. The Government is resolute in its commitment to address any behaviour or act that is unbecoming of the representatives abroad,” it concluded.
