The Gambian government has allocated D30 million to the newly established Victims Reparation Commission (VRC) to advance reparations for survivors of past human rights abuses. The announcement was made by Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dawda A. Jallow, during the Third Ordinary Session of the National Assembly’s 2025 Legislative Year on Wednesday, 10 September.

Responding to questions from lawmakers during the oral question segment, Minister Jallow explained that D20 million of the funds has been earmarked for direct reparations to victims, while D10 million will support the operational needs of the Commission.

He revealed that from the operational budget, D5.3 million has already been released by the Ministry of Finance to help set up the Commission, while D17.5 million of the reparations fund has been disbursed. However, actual reparations payments are yet to begin as the VRC is finalizing internal policies, strategies, and eligibility criteria to ensure a fair and transparent process.

The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the long wait and resilience of victims, stressing that while financial compensation cannot undo the suffering endured, reparations represent an important step toward recognition, justice, and restoration.

The establishment of the VRC follows recommendations from the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) and underscores the government’s commitment to accountability, national reconciliation, and victim-centred justice.

The Ministry further assured that reparations will be handled with integrity and transparency, with resources directed to those deemed eligible. It also called on Gambians to see the process as a vital step in consolidating peace and strengthening national unity.
