GFS clarifies €30M cost of ferry repairs

Jan 10, 2022, 2:40 PM

Press release: It has been brought to the attention of the Ferry Services Management that an amount of €30 million is being spent on the new engines, propulsion systems and other spares for the repairs of the Kunta Kinteh, Kanilai and Johe Ferries.

In the month of August, 2021, The Point Newspaper ran a news article from an interview with the General Manager of the Ferry Services on plans to procure new engines for three ferries, in a bid to improve service efficiency and performance at Banjul-Barra crossing point.

Meanwhile, the amount quoted in the said article is correct but the currency is wrong; it should have been reported as 30 million dalasis, not Euros. The error is inadvertent on the side of the journalist who carried the story.

It is true that all 3 ferries are being refitted with new engines and propulsion systems to improve their technical suitability to provide a more reliable service. Hence their progressive withdrawal for the engine installation by local engineering staff. There will be disruptions in service but the understanding of our customers and the travelling public is solicited as we strive to improve performance.

The Management of GFS once again solicits the cooperation and understanding of the public during this period.
