Kandeh argued that any effort to censor or control the media could have serious consequences for the country’s democracy.
According to him, such actions risk limiting the free flow of information, weakening transparency, and undermining accountability.
He emphasised that the media plays a critical role as the "fourth estate," ensuring that those in power remain answerable to the public.
The GDC further warned that controlling the media narrative could lead to the distortion of facts and reduce citizens’ ability to make informed decisions.
The party maintained that open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas are essential for a healthy democracy. It also cautioned against any policy that could polarise public opinion or suppress dissenting voices.
The statement also raised concerns about the broader implications of the policy, suggesting it could extend beyond traditional media to include social media platforms.
Kandeh questioned whether the move was intended to conceal issues such as corruption, governance failures or other sensitive matters.
In addition, the GDC pointed out what it described as a contradiction, noting that the current government had previously criticised the former regime for restricting press freedom.
The party thus said it is "embarrassing" to witness similar situations coming into effect under the present administration.
While rejecting the framework, the GDC called on citizens to remain vigilant in defending democratic principles.
The party highlighted the role of independent institutions, such as the Gambia Press Union and the Media Council of The Gambia, noting that these bodies already provide professional oversight and self-regulation within the media sector.
Kandeh concluded by urging media practitioners to continue operating within the law while maintaining independence in their work.
The government has yet to issue a detailed public response to the concerns raised by the opposition.
