Nyakassi M.B. Sanyang, the statistician general of the Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) has revealed that the 2024 Population and Housing Census Preliminary results will be released on or before 9 August 2024.

“This will be followed by the gradual release of the thematic reports. GBoS and partners would also endeavor to produce all the reports within a time frame of 3 months from end of July, 2024,” he added.

Sanyang unveiled these developments at a press conference held at the GBoS Office on Thursday on the status of the census listing and enumeration exercise.

He stated that GBoS has so far registered 99% structures in the country following the conclusion of the census data collection at the ongoing 2024 population and housing census.

The report, he said, came through the status of listing exercise, evidence driven from the Geographic Information System (GIS) cartography and the synchronised data.

Giving updates on the listing exercise; he said that the 99% coverage rate for the country is an important milestone considering that census coverages are never 100 percent.

Going further on the enumeration of households, SG Sanyang informed that significant progress has been registered; noting that as of Monday, July 24, 2024, data synchronised from the field showed that about 97% of the estimated total population has been enumerated.

He advanced that the payment of the remaining 70% to the census personnel has all been paid to all personnel recruited to work in the census in various positions for the normal census periods and whose names were submitted for payment.

The payment was made by the Harmonizing and Improving Statistics in West and Central Africa (HISWACA) the GBoS project implementation unit, he said.

He continued that each personnel was contracted separately and payment was attached to successful performance and appropriate submission of devices handed to them for the exercise.

“Some payments are being reviewed due to issues related to mishandling of tablets, theft of tablets and laptops, also there were others whose contracts have been terminated due to their unscrupulous behavior,” he stated.
