The National Unity Party (NUP), led by Dr. Lamin J. Darbo, has formally withdrawn from negotiations to join the proposed CHANGE Coalition, ending 18 months of dialogue facilitated by the APEX Initiative.

In a statement released on Monday, party spokesperson Saidina Abubacarr Jarjou confirmed that the National Executive Committee reached the decision following extensive internal deliberations. The party cited its institutional mandate, strategic priorities, obligations to members, and an assessment of the current political landscape as decisive factors.

The NUP expressed gratitude to the APEX Initiative for its “professional leadership and commitment to dialogue among opposition groups” and commended the maturity and spirit of compromise demonstrated by all participating parties.

“This decision in no way diminishes our respect for APEX or for the stakeholders who have chosen to proceed,” the statement read. The party acknowledged the importance of collective action in advancing democratic governance and wished the coalition success in its endeavors.

Reaffirming its commitment to the principles that guided the talks hope, accountability, national renewal, good governance, and equity the NUP pledged to continue engaging Gambians and stakeholders in pursuit of a united, prosperous, and democratic Gambia grounded in the rule of law.
