The forum underscored the important step in advancing the country’s preparations for its voluntary national review under the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).
He emphasised the importance of the gathering as The Gambia prepares for the 2026 International Migration Review Forum (IMRF).
"The IMRF is a crucial platform for assessing progress in implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration," he said.
PS Yabou also acknowledged the presence of governors, directors, and representatives from various departments and agencies, highlighting their crucial role in promoting migration governance and development in The Gambia.
He urged governors to engage young people in national dialogue, emphasising their responsibility to contribute to The Gambia's development.
Mr. Yabou called for inclusive consultations with civil society, youth, private sector, and local communities to prepare a comprehensive voluntary national review for the 2026 IMRF.
He thanked the development partners and stakeholders for their support, highlighting the importance of collective effort in addressing migration challenges.
Sibgha Ajaz, Programme Coordinator of Migration Management at International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said the Gambia made notable progress in implementing the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), including establishing a National Coordination Mechanism and operationalising the National Migration Policy.
She noted that the challenges remain, such as irregular migration, limited pathways, and socioeconomic vulnerabilities.
She indicated that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is supporting The Gambia in this process, facilitating consultations and providing data analysis. "The Gambia's experiences and commitment to migration governance can contribute significantly to the global conversation at the 2026 IMRF".
