Abdoulie Bojang, former speaker of the National Assembly and former ambassador to South Africa, was laid to rest yesterday at his home village, Sangajor, Foni District.

Hon. Abdoulie Bojang served as a teacher, deputy speaker, and speaker of the National Assembly before eventually becoming an ambassador to South Africa.

In a tribute, the speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta expressed condolences to Bojang’s family and the nation as a whole. He described the late Speaker Bojang as a dedicated public servant who embodied the spirit of service to his country and inspired the youth with his passion for public service.

Speaker Jatta highlighted that late Speaker Bojang earned respect from both sides through his work in Parliamentary Committees and his advocacy for education.

Jatta noted that Bojang's contributions, discipline and genuine concern for the Gambian people would be remembered.

Having served alongside Bojang, Hon. Jatta recounted his journey from joining the Assembly in 2007 to becoming Deputy Speaker and then Speaker in 2010, before serving as Gambia’s Ambassador to South Africa.

Hon. Jatta expressed that Bojang’s determination and warmth continued to inspire him as he presides over the House.

“Abdoulie consistently garnered followers through his thoughtful handling of complex issues in a diverse political and social environment. His political, social, and economic awareness, maturity, and approachability defined his interactions with colleagues of differing views.” Speaker Jatta said of Speaker Bojang.

“He embodied the essence of a servant leader, and his contributions to The Gambia will inspire his children and the people to continue his legacy. His family can take comfort in knowing he dedicated his life to serving humanity.”

Meanwhile Vice President Muhamadou B.S. Jallow described the late Bojang’s life as a testament to selfless service to the nation.

He highlighted that, as a former teacher, Bojang nurtured young minds to become responsible citizens. During his teaching career, his classroomom became a sanctuary of hope and opportunity, where every student felt valued and empowered to reach their full potential.

VP Jallow said Bojang carried the heart of a teacher into the halls of the National Assembly, where he became a champion for the people, an advocate.

Bojang had a unifying voice during times of division.

“As Speaker, he presided with wisdom, fairness and an unwavering commitment to the democratic principles that defined our nation. He lived a life that extended beyond his professional role, becoming a beloved member of his community, a mentor to many, and a source of strength,” he expressed.

Other speakers, including Hon. Billay G. Tunkara, Hon. Alagie S. Darboe, Hon. Samba Jallow, Hon. Almameh Gibba, and Sheriffo Nyassi, who were friends and family of the deceased, also extended their condolences and paid their respects to the late Abdoulie Bojang at the National Assembly.
