The suspect, a Senegalese has been arrested by police and is currently under custody as investigation into the matter continues. Both the accused and the deceased are fishermen from Senegal.
A source who is familiar with the matter and wished to speak to our The Point on the condition of anonymity confirmed the development, saying: “A quarrel ensued between the two when the deceased claimed that the accused stole his D400 kept inside his shoe.”
“The deceased and the accused first met at a bar in Tanji. That was the first time both of them met. However, the deceased was staying at Gunjur Kajabang at the time of their first meeting.”
He explained that the accused later joined the deceased at Gunjur Kajabang and asked to stay with him which he (deceased) agreed.
“However, on the 3rd of July, around 23:00hrs the deceased claimed that his money was missing and that it was the suspect who stole it.”
“When the suspect was asked how the incident happened, he claimed that it was the deceased (Sheikh Sey) who was having a knife with him and closed the door and threatened to kill him if he (Lamp Faal) failed to produce his D400.
“The suspect claimed that during their quarrel, he jumped on the deceased and grabbed the knife from the deceased and stabbed him below his chest leaving him in a pool of blood.”
After the stabbing incident, our source added, the suspect decided to go to Gunjur Kajabang and hid at a bar while drunk. He was arrested by two people and handed over to the fire rescue officers who were at the seaside who then handed him to the Gunjur Police Station.
The body was then taken to Gunjur Health Centre before a referral to Ndemban Clinic and then Banjul for postmortem.
The accused has been charged with murder.
