A woman was yesterday convicted and sentenced to a fine of D5000. She was also ordered to pay the complainant a compensation of D10,000 in default to serve two years imprisonment. This followed the plea of guilty by the convict. The case was presided over by Magistrate Colley of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutors alleged that Kaddy Leigh, on or about the 30th of June, 2023, at Senegambia, in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of The Gambia, assaulted Jainaba Kinteh by cutting off her left ear with a broken bottle, occasioning her grievous bodily harm.

In related development, Jainaba Kinteh was also arraigned yesterday before Magistrate Mben Faal of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting Kaddy Leigh. She denied any wrongdoing. She told the court that it was Kaddy Leigh who first bit her on her hand and as a result, she also bit her on her ear.

This implied that she was pleading not guilty. The court granted her bail in the sum of D25,000 with a Gambian surety, who should deposit his or her ID card to the registrar of the court. Hearing continues on 1st August, 2023,
