As the Chairman of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), President Barrow received the President of Kosovo, H.E. Dr. Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu, on the sidelines of UNGA. Their discussion centered on fostering dialogue among the Muslim Ummah and strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest, particularly in the promotion of democracy, the rule of law, and socio-economic progress.
Both leaders highlighted the critical need for unity and support within the Muslim world, focusing on strategies to advance their respective nations and their people.
In another significant meeting, President Barrow met with Madam Alice Albright, the CEO of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), who provided an update on the ongoing Compact and Threshold programs awarded to The Gambia by the US government. These programs represent key components in The Gambia’s efforts to achieve sustainable economic development.
President Barrow expressed gratitude for the MCC’s confidence in The Gambia and underscored the alignment of the Compact with the country’s National Development Plan, “Yiriwa.”
He highlighted his government’s commitment to leveraging these resources for the socio-economic advancement of Gambians, reinforcing the importance of development partnerships.
Additionally, President Barrow took the opportunity to welcome Mrs. Cherie Blair, a long-time ally of The Gambia’s National Development Agenda, during another meeting on the sidelines.
Their discussions focused on Omnia Law Firm’s continuing support for The Gambia’s transitional justice program, with Mrs. Blair’s expertise being instrumental in advancing the country’s justice reforms.
President Barrow acknowledged Mrs. Blair’s contributions and noted that their meetings at the UN General Assembly have now become a cherished tradition, symbolising the enduring partnership.
President Barrow arrived in New York on Monday evening and attended the official opening of UNGA 79 on Tuesday, 24th September 2024. His packed schedule at the General Assembly underscores The Gambia’s proactive diplomatic engagement and its efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships to drive the nation’s development goals.
With a focus on democracy, rule of law, and socio-economic growth, President Barrow’s engagements reflect The Gambia’s increasing role on the global stage, particularly as a champion of peace and progress within the OIC and as a committed partner in international development efforts.
