Following The Gambia’s co-hosting of the first Sahel Governance Forum with the UNDP, President Adama Barrow received delegates on a series of courtesy visits at the State House in Banjul.

President Barrow emphasised that “if the environment for democracy, peace and stability does not exist, leaders cannot realise their social contract with the citizens.” Thus, called for strategic partnership to give peace a priority to serve the people.

The President informed the UNDP delegation that the TRRC is at the implementation stage and the Reparation Commission had been set up. He also outlined unforeseen challenges in the funding gap, slowing down the implementation process.

He assured the UNDP team that his government would continue to look inward for innovative financing to pursue its development agenda.

Ms. Eziakonwa appreciated The Gambia Government for collaborating with UNDP in funding community development projects such as school rehabilitation, hospital improvements, and energy provision. She reinforced UNDP's commitment to collaborate with The Gambia on various development programmes, particularly on the community development projects funded by the Gambian government.

In a separate engagement, President Barrow in his audience with the Gambian-born President of ECOWAS Commission Dr. Omar Alieu Touray briefed President Barrow on the implementation of the directives from ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during the last summit in June 2025. He added that the intergovernmental organisation is in the process of identifying chief negotiators to engage three of its member countries: Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali for withdrawing from the organisation. Dr. Touray said despite their exit, the regional bloc will remain united and maintained free movement of people relating to trade and social development.

On concerns raised about the Eco single currency, Dr. Touray disclosed that ECOWAS will launch the Eco currency in 2027, which is determined by the number of criteria to be met by member State. He expressed optimism and added “the idea is to launch the single currency with those who are ready, those who need more time will be supported so that they can also participate.”

In another engagement with the Africa Women Leadership Network (AWLN) President, Binnet Dion and members of the AWLN Gambia Chapter, the President of the Republic informed them of his government’s commitment to mainstreaming gender parity and the 30% gender representation in governance structures. He noted the gradual change of perceptions about women’s representation in governance and assured his commitment to support women’s endeavours.

The team expressed their gratitude to the President for hosting the inaugural Sahel Governance Forum in promoting peace and security in the region and commended his leadership in championing the Gender Equality and Women Empowerment agenda. They also acknowledged his efforts in elevating AWLN's profile, protecting women's rights both nationally and internationally. This will ensure continued progress and sustainable development in the country. (Source: State House)
