Barrow receives NHRC for annual reporting meeting

On Tuesday morning, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency President Adama Barrow at the State House in Banjul.

During the Annual Reporting Meeting with the Head of State, President Adama Barrow emphasised the importance of respecting human rights for our democracy. He stated that the government is an important partner to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), despite the accompanying challenges. He assured the Chairperson of the Commission, Mr Emmanuel Joof, of his government's belief in the principles of and political will to promote and protect human rights.

Other pertinent Human Rights issues, such as Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), the use of illicit drugs and the rise of hate speech on social media, were discussed.

The President further informed the NHRC that his government is tolerant and is focusing on addressing the citizens’ right to development and the economic challenges they face.

In addition, President Barrow stressed the crucial role of the media in portraying the country positively for the right reasons. He highlighted the government's progressive scorecards in various areas of governance and press freedom. He noted that the media has an impact on perceptions and urged the National Council for Civic Education to boost its civic education programs to raise awareness of citizens’ rights and responsibilities to address issues.

Commissioner Joof praised the Barrow administration for making significant strides in promoting and protecting human rights. He further encouraged the government to continue striving to strengthen the promotion and protection of economic, social, and cultural rights.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been in existence for five years, with its main focus on promoting and protecting Human Rights in The Gambia. President Barrow expressed his gratitude to the Commission for its achievements and encouraged them to maintain impartiality in the execution of their duties.
