The outreach, held from August 8th to 15th, 2026 under the theme “Informed Citizens: The Pillar of Credible Elections and Resilient Democracy”, comes at a critical moment as The Gambia prepares for the December 5 presidential polls.
Local leaders and residents warmly welcomed the initiative, praising the NCCE for bringing direct engagement to communities often left feeling distant from the capital. The campaign provided face-to-face platforms where citizens could interact with civic educators, better understand the Constitution and Electoral Act, and openly discuss concerns about polarisation and misinformation.
Community members hailed the sensitisation drive as a lifeline, emphasising its importance in addressing divisive issues such as tribal sentiments, inflammatory rhetoric, and the spread of false information. By combining immersive dialogues with interactive radio programmes, the NCCE has succeeded in bridging information gaps, fostering tolerance, and ensuring inclusive participation across political divides.
As the December ballot approaches, this grassroots engagement is being recognised as a vital safeguard for national stability. It reinforces the collective realisation that an informed, vigilant, and legally literate citizenry is the bedrock of a peaceful, inclusive, and credible democratic process.
The campaign unfolded through two powerful channels: immersive community dialogues and interactive radio programmes. Together, they created spaces where ordinary Gambians could confront pressing issues misinformation, tribal divisions, and inflammatory rhetoric that threaten national cohesion. By weaving together local voices and expert guidance, the NCCE bridged information gaps and nurtured tolerance across political divides.
In one CRR community, young people gathered under a mango tree to debate the dangers of fake news. “We need to be vigilant,” a youth leader remarked, “because misinformation can destroy peace faster than anything else.” His words captured the essence of the campaign: empowering citizens to take ownership of their democracy by being informed and resilient.
NCCE’s grassroots engagement is being hailed as a shield against instability. It is a reminder that democracy is not only about ballots and campaigns, but about conversations in villages, radio waves carrying civic lessons, and the collective realization that every citizen has a role to play.
The story of this campaign is ultimately the story of Gambians themselves determined to safeguard peace, strengthen inclusion, and ensure that the nation’s democratic journey remains credible and resilient.
