The governing Council of the Accountancy Bodies of West Africa (ABWA) conducted its third quarter Council meeting in The Gambia which is hosted by the GICA on the 15th of September 2023 at the Paradise Suites Hotel.
The regional Accountancy bodies conducted a one-day meeting in The Gambia, discussing matters relating to Professional Accountants, the future of Professional Accountants in the region and how to better serve the economies of West African Countries.
Unlike all other ABWA Council Meetings, this 99th ABWA Council meeting was preceded by a Technical Session aimed at highlighting some emerging issues of the profession to delegates. The chosen area for this Technical Session covers the recent International Federation of Accountants’ Standards of IFRS S1 and S2. IFRS S1 and S2 are new standards issued by IFAC and they are mainly on Disclosure of Sustainability Related Financial Information and Climate Related Disclosures respectively. In the meeting, a new President of ABWA was decorated and thus the mantle of leadership was moved from Drissa Kone, the President of ONNECA Ivory Coast to the current President Mr Victor S. Tanwone, the President of Liberia Institute of Chartered Public Accountants (LICPA).
In his acceptance speech, Mr Tanwone promised to take the matters of Professional Accountants to higher heights and all the Presidents of other Professional Accountancy Organizations wished him well and reassured him of their support during his tenure.
In his closing remark, the Executive Secretary of ABWA, Dr Abel Asien, thanked the GICA Secretariat and the entire governing Council of GICA for hosting the 99th ABWA Council Meeting and making it successful.
