The duo were charged with possession of prohibited drugs contrary to Section 43 (4) b of the Drug Control Act 2003, laws of The Gambia.
The particulars of the offence revealed that Alagie Njie, the first accused and Assan Jobe, the second accused, on or 19 February 2024 at Kololi in the Kanifing municipality, had in their possession of 2g and 84 mg of cocaine – a prohibited drug for the purpose of trafficking without valid licence.
However the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the offence charged.
E.S. Ceesay, the prosecuting officer, who appeared for the Drug Law Enforcement Agency – The Gambia (DLEAG), applied for the accused persons to be remanded at Mile 2 pending their bail application from the High Court, citing that “the offence which the accused persons are charged with is serious.
Magistrate Touray granted the application of the prosecution and remanded the duo at the Mile 2 Prison, saying if they desire bail, they can apply for it from the High Court in Banjul.
The matter was adjourned until 22nd May 2024.
In a related development, Alagie Njie, the first accused was charged with possession of prohibited drugs contrary to Section 35 (1) b of the Drug Control Act 2003, laws of The Gambia.
The prosecution alleged that Alagie Njie on the 19th day of February 2024 at Kololi in the Kanifing Municipality, had in his possession 5g and 747 mg of cannabis, a prohibited drug.
Njie, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecuting officer, E.S. Ceesay applied for an adjournment to provide the court with witnesses.
Subsequently, Magistrate Touray granted the accused bail in the sum of D500,000 with 2 sureties who shall deposit their valid ID cards.
