The 1st Edition of the joint Youth Summer Camp, organised by Brikama Area Council and Grand-Yoff Municipality (Dakar) was on 28th July 2010 declared closed in Brikama.
The event which seeks to accelerate the cooperation of young people towards integration, has gathered over 100 participants from The Gambia and Senegal, presenting youth organisations in the two brotherly countries.
In declaring the youth camp closed, Mr. Lamin Haja Bojang, on behalf of the Chairman of Brikama Area Council advised the participants to strengthen efforts in achieving integration. Mr. Bojang noted the resolve of his council towards strengthening the spirit of the partnership that exists between BAC and Grand Yoff Municipality.
Speaking earlier, Mr. Modou Jonga, the Public Relations Officer of BAC described the event as "a success and a plus to the partnership of the two parties." Mr. Jonga further expressed gratitude to individuals and organisations that help in ensuring the smooth running of the camp.
The youth representative in BAC, Mr. Cherno Jawla gave an overview of the activities of the camp which includes a series of skills training, tree-planting exercise, sporting events, forum on integration and roles of young people towards integration and experience sharing on youth related matters.
Mr. Madio Diop, the Deputy Mayor and youth representative in Grand-Yoff Municipality underscored the importance of the event and reiterated the success of the camp.
For his part, Mr. Mahmud Jawla, the regional youth/sport officer said the empowerment of youths is central to the policies of the two governments. Mr. Jawla then advised the participants to desist from the use of illicit drugs.
The youth and child officer of Saamasang Federation affiliated to Childfund, The Gambia, Mr. Amadou Tambedou said the event manifests a giant strive towards integrating youths within the jurisdiction of the two parties. Mr. Tambedou urged for the sustainability of the youth camp.
The Mayor of Grand Yoff Municipality, Mr. Mamadou Mbaye expressed delight at the success of the youth gathering in inculcating the culture of tolerance, integration, etc. into the participants. Mayor Mbaye commended the two governments for creating the enabling environment for the existence of the partnership agreement.
