The Youth Ambassadors of Peace has changed its name to Peace Ambassadors-The Gambia (PAG) with effect from Monday 17th May 2010. The unveiling of the new name coincided with the 9th anniversary of the organisation.
Addressing journalists at the event, the former President of the organisation, Mr. Nfamara Darboe said that among their activities, is to build the capacity of human resources with skills, so as to be able to convince people on what they are talking about. He described peace ambassadors, as ambassadors with difference, and noted that they are very democratic.
"Peace does not only mean the absence of arms conflicts but rather beyond that," he asserted.
He challenged members to continue to be committed to their cause and urged them not to rush to do things. According to Mr. Darboe, in the past their association did not have any form of funding, but used their own finance to carry out their activities. He asserted that over the years they had implemented a series of activities, among which include training of 800 youths on life skills and establishment of seven recruitment centres, in all the administrative regions of The Gambia.
He said they are also engaged in other activities, such as disaster reduction, conflicts management, human rights and among others. He thanked their members for helping the organisation to reach where it is today. He also expressed gratitude to their partners, whom he said, had helped them in the realisation of their objectives. "Educating people about peace means educating the entire world," he asserted.
The newly elected President of the organisation, Mr. Lamin M Sanyang stated that their association is an organisation that aims to solve problems. He emphasised that the organisation believes in bringing every sector of the society on board, thus the need to change its name. He revealed that they would be working on key areas of health, agriculture, education, good governance and leadership skills in the near future.
"In the cause of peace maintenance every one is a stakeholder," he concluded.
Other speakers included Mr. Abdou Boye, the Programme Coordinator for the organisation.
The association aim to liberate society from trouble and violence and develop a future, where peace and development is at the centre.
