Workshop FC on Sunday beat Universal Football Academy by a goal to nil in a keenly and well-contested encounter in the ongoing Lamin Sports Committee Nawetan competition played at the Late Sanna Jatta Memorial football grounds.
The encounter saw both teams put up a brilliant performance during the game, but could only create a few chances in the process.
Modou Lamin Jatta had a golden opportunity to put Workshop FC ahead in the 33rd minute of the game, but goalkeeper Serign Badjie came out on time to rescue his side.
However, Jatta still had another opportunity to register his name on the score sheet for his side, when he scored the only goal of the game for his side just three minutes into the second period, from a superb strike, this time leaving goalkeeper Serign Badjie helpless.
Both teams have now collected six points each in three encounters.
Elsewhere, at Ndofan village in the Lower Niumi District of the North Bank Region, in the ongoing Ndofan Sports Committee Senior Nawetan competition, Ndofan FC, Mbollet Ba FC, Jollof FC and Jokor FC all booked their places to the semi final of the competition sponsored by Seedy M. B. Kiniteh, president of the Gambia Football Association.
Mbollet Ba FC made it to the semi final after securing a 1-1 draw against Mbulum FC in their final game of the group stage played at the Biri-Biri Mini Stadium on Sunday.
Amat Jobe put Mbollet Ba FC ahead in the second minute of the game, while Buba Bah leveled the score line for Mbulum FC in the 26th minute of the game. However, his goal could only serve as a mere consolation for his side, as it could not guarantee them a semi final spot.
Jokor FC advanced to the semi final after securing eleven points in four encounters. Jollof FC made it to the semi final with nine points in four games.
Mbollet Ba FC sailed to the semi final after collecting nine points in four games, while Ndofan FC also qualified for the semi final after securing six points in four games.
In the Under-15 Nawetan competition organized by the same sports committee and sponsored by Ngean Marong, Jollof FC of Fass Njaga Choi village beat their neighbours Black Stars FC by 2-0 with Pa Babou Choi scoring both goals for Jollof FC in the 10th and 23rd minutes of the game.
Speaking to the head coach of Universal Football Academy, Yusupha Sanyang, shortly after his side’s defeat to Workshop FC, he said he was delighted despite losing, noting that this is football, which you cannot predict.
“We came out to win, but this is how it ended”, he added, noting that both teams are from the same area and are like brothers.
“We are looking forward to our next game, and we are fully prepared for it”, he stated, adding that he worked against Workshop FC, but that the rains affected them during the first half of the game.
“We are going to lead our group”, he noted, adding that losing against Workshop FC is nothing to them, because they will top their group at the end of the group stage.
“I know we will be finalists”, he remarked, noting that this defeat will cause no harm to them, because they know they will make it up in the end.
He concluded by thanking the fans and urging them to continue the support, noting that the morale of the fans is high, even though they lost, because they know the team will make it up.
