Woman convicted for common assault

The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on Monday convicted and sentenced one Mariatou Jatta on charges of common assault and criminal trespass.

She was fined D1,000 on count one in default to serve one month in prison and, on count two, she was fined D700, in default to serve one month in prison.

Both sentences are to run concurrently.

Ms Jatta was also ordered to compensate the complainant with D300.

Narrating the facts of the case, Cadet Inspector Camara stated that the incident happened on 23 September 2012, at Manjai Kunda.

Prosecutor Camara further narrated that the complainant was in bed and the accused entered the house and asked the complainant to put on her trousers, as she was there to fight her.

The complainant did not respond and the accused started insulting the complainant’s parent, adding that the accused then slapped the complainant on her face.

The accused further threatened the complainant by saying that wherever she see her, she would beat her up, and the matter was later reported to Manjai Police Station.

Count one of the charge sheet stated that on 23 September 2012, at Manjai Kunda in the Kanifing Municipality, the accused person, Mariatou Jatta, assaulted the complainant by slapping her on her face.

Count two read that she entered the house of the complainant with intent to intimidate, annoy or insult her.
