Wallidan FC beat Samger FC by a goal to nil in Saturday's Gambia Football Association (GFA) first division league played at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium.
The first chance of the game went to Samger FC in the 34th minute of the game when Lamin Sarjo Samateh should have capitalised on goalkeeper Babou Jah’s goalkeeping error to give his side the lead but his weak effort was saved for a corner kick by goalkeeper Babou Jah.
Muhammed Fayinkeh scored the only goal of the game for Wallidan FC in the 45th minute from a sensible finish when Daniel Nicole’s shot struck the cross bar 2 minutes after he was substituted in to replace Isaha Dem.
Ousman Sillah and George Cole both had golden opportunities to register their names on the score sheet for Wallidan FC in the 74th minute of the game but their efforts were denied by goalkeeper Ebrima Madi Camara.
Wallidan FC have now collected 4 points in three games while Samger FC could only manage to collect a single point in three encounters.
Speaking to reporters shortly after the game, the assistant coach of Wallidan FC, Mansour Jeng, said winning Samger was "a great achievement" for his side because they last beat them in the FA Cup final.
He added that last season they lost to Samger in both legs of the league, noting that this time around they came out in full force in the game despite knowing it was not going to be an easy encounter.
They are preparing game after game, he says, adding that this season their aim is to try to get the league in the first round to avoid struggling for the title race in the second round.
Jeng said they would prepare very well for their game against the Gambia Ports Authority even though they know it won’t be an easy game. "Let us expect good football and fair play during that game," he said.
Jane Joof, head coach of Samger FC, said they expected a tough encounter against Wallidan FC because last season they defeated Wallidan FC in both legs and that "Wallidan have more physical players" than his side this time around.
