One of the most action-orientated zones, Serrekunda East Sports Committee, is currently constructing two major projects within its premises.
The projects are centred on constructing volleyball and basketball pitches at the left side of the front end of the mini-stadium.
The zone, since the present committee members took over, were said to have been engaged in the rehabilitation and construction of some structures alongside the existing ones.
Recently, the zone constructed a pavilion to the tune of D150,000 and inaugurated it the following year during a knockout cup final.
Being an eye-catching area for all sports loving people in The Gambia, SerreKunda East Mini-stadium is blessed for being on a highway and at the centre of town where even passersby flock in to enjoy the activities in the area.
It is for this reason the committee feels it necessary to have more sporting structures in the zone, as since the park was founded all those structures were not there.
However this recent move by the present executive is said to be well appreciated by those in need of the sporting facilities, especially volleyball and basketball associations, who were crying for standard courts even at the time of the then executive that started the foundation but could not complete it.
When this reporter visited the site and asked the secretary general of the committee, Alhagie Nyassi, about this development, Mr Nyassi said the work on the courts commenced over five months ago.
The work is earnestly in progress, he added: “All the funding is done by the committee, and because we have not got any sponsor yet it delays our work sometimes. But we will do everything possible to make sure this ongoing project is completed as expected.”
