The Special Criminal Court on Monday convicted and sentenced one Edrissa Sanneh to a fine of D20,000 in default to serve two years in prison.

Edrissa Sanneh, who was convicted on a charge of rape, was also ordered to pay a compensation of D20,000 in default to serve another one year in prison.

According to the charge sheet, the convicted person, Edrissa Sanneh, in 2011, at Sabiji Village, in the Kombo North District of the West Coast Region, raped an underage girl.

In his judgement, the trial judge adduced that the convicted person was charged with the offence of rape, which he had denied, adding that the prosecution called five witnesses in support of their case, and tendered an exhibit in court, while the accused testified without calling any witness.

The trial judge added that the victim identified the accused in court as the person who raped her and after having sexual intercourse with her, she was bleeding and her pant was stained with semen.

Still in his judgement, the trial judge pointed out that the accused in his cautionary statement stated that the victim had begged him money, which he gave to her and in turn they had sexual intercourse.

He further stated that the medical certificate tendered in court did not indicate that the victim was raped, adding that the prosecution case was so weak.

The trial judge, however, noted that the accused himself admitted having carnal knowledge of the victim.
