Police officer testifies in theft case

Sgt 2696 Buba Sanyang, a police officer, recently testified in the trial of one Lamin Njie, who was charged with stealing before Magistrate Ceesay of the Kanifing Mgistrates’ Court.

Testifying as the last prosecution witness, Sgt Buba Sanyang told the court that he lives at Brikama and is a police officer attached to the Serious Crime Unit at Kanifing Police Station.

He adduced that he could recognised the accused, Lamin Njie, and could recall what happened on 14 August 2010, when he recorded the cautionary and voluntary statements from the accused person.

According to him, he read the cautionary and voluntary wording to the accused in the presence of an independent witness. He said the accused and the independent witness both signed the statements.

He said that the accused accepted the charges against him at the police station.

Meanwhile, the accused person when called upon to put up his defence told the court that he is going to rest his case.

Subsequently, the presiding magistrate adjourned the case to 7 October 2010 for judgment.

According to the particulars of offence, the accused on the 12 August 2010 at Pipeline stole a laptop marked Siemens, valued at D15,000 being the property of one Saidou Njie.
