Police officer testifies in assault case

A police officer, Famara A. Sanyang, attached to the police prosecution unit, Wednesday testified in the trial involving one Lamarana Jallow, accused of assaulting a police officer before principal magistrate Omar Cham of the Brikama magistrates’ court.

Officer Sanyang told the court that he is attached to Brikama police station prosecution unit, adding that on 6 August 2014 he was on duty at the court.

The accused person was on trial in another matter of assaulting a police, in a different courtroom. After the testimony of the witness, who is a police officer, the accused started using abusive words against the witness.

He said when the witness tried to handcuff him, he refused and knocked him, adding that another prosecuting officer intervened and handcuffed the accused.

He added that while the accused was leaving the courtroom, he hit the back of 1st Class F. Trawally who was standing.

The hearing will continue on 29 September 2014.
