The National Women’s League division one championship kicked off in fashion in various football grounds at the weekend with last year’s runners-up Red Scorpions gaining the upper hands with a hard fought 2-nil win over Armed Forces at the Independence Stadium on Friday.
The weekend win was Choro Mbenga’s first game in charge since she completed her Caf instructor course in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, recently.
The reigning champions, Interior, got off to an unconvincing start to the campaign as they were held to a deadly 1-1 draw against Abuko United at the Father Gough Sports complex in Manjai Kunda on Saturday while the game between Company Ten and Makasutu was postponed.
The second division is also in session with Jeshwang United playing a goalless draw with Future BI at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
The biggest result in the campaign so far came when City Girls beat Jam City 4-nil at the Manjai field, while the Bakau girls Kinteh’s United, who were relegated to the second division last season, suffered another disappointing 1-nil defeat to the promoted Immigration side at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium on Sunday.
