The ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Banjul has summoned traditional medicine practitioners to a consultative meeting to discuss, among others, guidelines for practice in the use of media advertisements, the issue of registration forms, as well as guidelines for practicing.
The move followed a recent press release by the Ministry on the issue of a temporary suspension of media advertisement by traditional medicine practitioners in the country.
“After this meeting, all traditional medicine practitioners in the country would be required to register their practice with the ministry of Health and Social Welfare through various regional health teams,” another release from the ministry announced yesterday.
The ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the release added, recognizes traditional medicine as a vital component of the health-care system in The Gambia, and has adopted policies to officially acknowledge and regulate the practice of traditional medicine, following the development of the National Traditional Medicine Policy and Strategic Plan of The Gambia in 2008.
The ministry called for the continued cooperation of the general public during these developments.
