The
Gambia Tourism Board in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture,
as well as other stakeholders within the industry recently organised a weeklong
fishing competition in the country, as part of developing a tourism product.
Speaking at the opening of the event held at
Green Bamba Garden in Senegambia, Abdoulie Hydara, director general of GTBoard,
said this was the third edition of the event, and that it is very important as
far as tourism is concerned.
He
thanked the competitors, particularly the team who came all the way from UK.
Ousman
Kebbeh, product manager at GTBoard, said this is what tourism is all about, and
thanked the participants for coming to The Gambia and fishing in The Gambia.
He
said GTBoard has been partnering with other stakeholders to make sure that they
try what they could to support the industry, by bring a lot of anglers to The
Gambia.
GTBoard
is an arm of government working under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, so
be rest assure that this beach competition is something that the Gambia
government recognized, Kebbeh added.
Momodou
Bah, director of Quality and the licensing officer at the GTBoard, said they
put a lot of emphasis on sport tourism because they know that one of the most
entertaining is fishing; which is not just entertaining, but is also rewarding.
“The
Gambia is blessed with a diverse species of fish and very rich in terms of
flora and fauna and, as a result, there is a lot of fish,” he said, adding that
is the advantage of coming to The Gambia.
“Let
there be fair play and let there be fun,” Bah continued, adding that they would
also be part of the team to check, and hoped that the competition would be one
of the best.
