GPA edge pass Africell in GFA Premier Tier

Mar 11, 2011, 2:03 PM

The reigning GFA Division One League champions Gambia Ports Authority got off to a perfect start to 2010-11 GFA first division league with a hard fought 1-0 victory over the newly promoted side Africell in the week-one fixtures at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai Kunda.

GPA, who crashed out of the CAF Orange Champions League after their 2-0 aggregate defeat to Senegalese giants Jaraaf last month, lost to Gamtel in the Super cup last Saturday.

Coach Peter Bonu Johnson and his charges, whose poor run of form was a worrying sign for a teaming number of their fans, finally ended their disappoint run of form by walking away with all the needed points against Africell to send a warning to the rest of the opponents as the race for yet another GFA Division One League championship intensifies once again.

Both sides came into the game with the intention of collecting maximum points but it was GPA who dominated the ball possession as they launched a series of counterattacks in front of Africell’s goal-mouth.

They opened the scoring through striker Sam Gibba in the 13th minute of the game from a super strike that proved to be the winner for the ferry boys.

GPA have now joined Bakau United at the top of the league table with 3 points in a single game played so far in the 12 club championship.

Elsewhere, the FA and Super Cup champions Gamtel drew 0-0 with Interior in the other week-one clash at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium the same day.

Gamtel have now collected single point in one outing, while Interior have also collected 1 point in one game.

Meanwhile the week-two fixtures of the ongoing GFA Division One League are expected to resume on Saturday when Bakau United meet Samger at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium.
