The Gambia National Olympic Committee is soliciting nominations from the general public and national sporting associations for the sportsmen and women who have made a great impact in the development of sport and whose contributions still stand high in the sporting calendar of the country.
Moreover, a media dispatch stated that a special committee has been appointed under the chairmanship of Alhaji Hassan Joof, a sports enthusiast, to receive recommendations and nominations from the general public and sports associations of qualified people for these awards.
The national sports award was initiated by the GNOC in 1997 to reserve the sporting legacy of The Gambia . The award, which will be held Saturday 9th May 2009, will appreciate and recognise the contributions of those sportsmen and women who have died and also outstanding sportsmen and women who promoted the country through their performances, attitude and behaviour.From the inception of the award over 150 people, men and women, have been awarded in either of the following categories; Most outstanding sport personality, the sport hall of fame, the sport merit list, posthumous merit list award, honorary merit list award and sponsorship for sport award.
