The 2010/2011 Gambia Football Association First Division League championship commence in a grand style at various Mimi-Stadiums on Sunday following a successful final of the super cup a day earlier.

The championship proper began on Sunday with 3 crucial matches at the Serrekunda East, West, and Brikama Box Bar Mini-stadiums.

At Brikama on Sunday, there was a clash of titans between the West Coast Region outfit Brikama United and their fierce rivals Steve Biko, also known as the Bakau giant killers, an encounter that failed to produce a winner.

The two sides had to be settled on a goalless draw following a ninety-minute pulsating encounter under the watchful eyes of a good number of supporters including the visiting Steve Biko fans of Bakau.

Elsewhere on Sunday, the Academy boys Samger entertained Real De Banjul to another pulsating 1-1 at the KG5 Mini-Stadium in Banjul.

Wallidan got off to a disappointing start to the campaign when they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Bakau United in the other division one league game played at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium to become the first team to secure the maximum three points at the expense of the capital city boys.

Striker Amadou Baldeh’s much anticipated strike proved to be the turning moment of the match much to the delight of the head coach Kebba Touray.

Matches in the week one fixtures continue on Wednesday when Interior meet Gamtel, the newly crowned super cup champions, at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium.

Gambia Ports Authority, who lost in their bid to win the super cup title, will travel to the Serrekunda West to battle it out with Africell, while the last game of week one fixtures will see Young Africans rub shoulders with former GFA division one league champions Armed Forces at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium.
