Gambia’s current FA Cup champions Gamtel will clash with Senegal’s FA Cup champions Cassa Sport in the first leg of the CAF Confederation cup preliminaries round at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium on Sunday 19 February 2012.
Gamtel, who won the FA and Super cups last season, also finished runners-up in the WAFU club competition hosted in Lome, Togo, in 2011.
The team has never participated in the CAF Confederation Cup. Hence their debut appearance, which starts on Sunday in this continental championship, is expected to be a decisive one as they look set for their first points at home against Cassa Sports in order to stand a better chance of reaching the next round of the competition.
Cassa Sport, a household name in Senegal football, have produced one of the finest players for the Senegalese national team, Teranga Lions, in the past and present generations of Senegal football.
Senegal’s teams have always had an edge over Gambian teams in the continent’s biggest club football showpiece, as Jaraaf eliminated Gambia Ports Authority in the CAF champions league last year but Gamtel eliminated Niary Tally in the WAFU club competition last season also.
