The Gambia National U-20 team will clash with the Gambia Local based team in a warm-up game set for today, Wednesday 26 March 2014, at the Brikama Box Bar Mini Stadium at 4.30pm.
The warm-up encounter is part of the Gambia National U-20 team’s preparations for the 2015 Africa U-20 Youth championship preliminary qualifiers first leg qualifiers tie away to Liberia National U-20 team on Sunday 6 April 2014, at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia, Liberia.
The Gambia National U-20 team under the guardian of head coach Tapha Manneh assisted by Abdoulie Bojang and Jane Joof, will use today’s warm-up encounter against the Gambia local based team to prepare his team physically and morally for the 2015 Africa U-20 preliminary qualifiers tie away to Liberia next month.
The Gambia made their debut in African U-20 youth championship in 2007, hosted in Congo Brazzaville, after beating Mali U-20 3-2 on aggregate in the qualifiers and managed to win bronze medal in their debut appearance in the continent’s junior biggest football fiesta after thrashing Zambia National U-20 team 3-1 in the third place play-off.
Gambia also made their debut in the global junior biggest football fray FIFA U-20 World Cup hosted in Canada in 2007, but were eliminated in the second round after losing to Austria U-20 2-1 and failed to qualify for the 2009 African U-20 Youth Championship after losing to Ghana U-20 3-1 on aggregate.
Gambia made their second appearance in the African U-20 Youth Championship hosted in South Africa in 2011 after beating Ivory Coast U-20 2-0 on aggregate in the qualifiers but were eliminated in the group stage and failed to qualify for the 2013 edition after losing to Morocco U-20 4-0 in the qualifiers.
