Fostering social justice

Feb 25, 2013, 10:33 AM

It is our firm conviction that there is an absolute necessity in fostering social justice, as an integral principle of peace and stability.

It is only by doing so that people can continue to live harmoniously and be compelled to actively participate in nation-building.

We must uphold the principles of social justice and equity, and thus promote gender equality, the rights of all peoples, including those perceived as critics.

The bottom line is that, as a country we must respect human dignity of all Gambians, irrespective of who they are.

Promoting social justice requires, among other things, ensuring justice for all, gender equity, serious measures towards poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work.

Social justice is important and healthy for the progress of all nations, including our small country, The Gambia.

What we are stressing here is to ensure that our society adheres to creating a society that is based on the principles of equality and justice.

Social justice can best be advanced when we remove barriers that people face as a result of age, sex, race, tribe, religion, culture, or disability.

Providing the essentials of development to all Gambians and those living in the country, irrespective of political affiliation or tribe is a key way of advancing social justice and harmony.

It is, therefore, our responsibility to continue to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, and promote protection of the rights of those who are helpless.
