Ebrima Williams came out first at the Brufut Monthly Run at a distance of 1.5 km, held yesterday from Brufut Gamtel junction to the primary school.
The monthly run was in preparation for young people towards the upcoming annual marathon run set to take place on 8 December 2012.
In a run of 8 participants, 7 were girls and Ebrima Williams took the lead, Sainabou Mendy came out second, Binta Mendy third and Fatou Corr fourth.
Speaking to Pointsport, Mamudou Max Jallow congratulated the participants, saying that though the turnout was “not good due to insufficient publicity”, those who came to take part were able to make it successful.
It is not easy to make this kind of events but hopefully, with so much commitment and hard work, they will surely make it and attract more participants, Max said, adding: “We want to make this a continuous event up to the Brufut Marathon Run, and this coming Brufut marathon is going to be a special one where prizes will be given to the winners for the first time.”
He added: “Every one hundred miles begins with one step and even the Brufut marathon started like this with 10 runners and now we have almost 400 participants. This year, we are anticipating 1000 participants in the upcoming Brufut Marathon Run.”
“The marathon run will be held in commemoration of the late Yahya Camara and we want to maintain and sustain the run,” he said.
He further encouraged the youth to take sport seriously, saying exercise eradicates sicknesses from the human body and keeps him healthier and stronger.
The events to be covered during the marathon include the 21km, 10km, 5km, 1.5km and the children’s race of 0.5km.
Sainabou Mendy, one of the participants, thanked the committee and further urged the youth to take the sport seriously, saying she was able to make it because of the usual training she does on the beach during the days she is not at school.
She therefore hopes to make it in the upcoming Brufut marathon, she said.
The next Brufut Monthly Run will be held on 21 October 2012 to which interested youths are invited and to take part in.
