Dunes FC on Sunday defeated Nyokoyor FC 4-3 in a post-match penalty shootout in the quarter final to advance to the semis of the 2008 Gunjur knockout championship after normal time play ended goalless at Gunjur football field.
The match was well contested with offensive and defensive play in the first few minutes of the game. In the 20th minute Dunes FC striker Amadou Allow got a one on one situation with Nyokoyor FC goalkeeperLamin Draboe but the shoot went wide.
In the 26th minute Dunes FC got another dead set opportunity when midfielder Buba Jatta took a powerful long-range shot but the goal was denied by Lamin Draboe. Nyokoyor FC's best opportunity came when the striker Fabai Janneh beat Dunes FC goalkeeper Lamin Touray but the ball went over bar and the first half ended 0-0.
As play resumed both teams watched their defensive line so as not to concede a goal. The game was tight as a result and went to a penalty shoot out. This ended 4-3 in favour of Dunes FC and the semi final is slated for this weekend, Saturday 31 January 2009. He further stated that his school was crowned champions of last year's Western Region Upper Basic Inter Schools Athletics Championship and they finished fifth in last year's inter schoolathleticschampionship organized by The Gambia SecondarySchool Sports Association. He advised the athletes to take athletics seriously and one day or the other they will acquire a scholarship or even become international athletes in future.
He hailed the students for their sense of discipline during the event and he urged them to keep up momentum.
According to Mr. Saye, the school will maintain its position in the forthcoming Western Region Upper Basic Schools Inter Schools Athletics Championship heat slated for later this year in Brikama. He expressed optimism that the school sports committee is doing everything to make sure the school retains the title they won last year in Brikama.
