St Augustines and St Josephs Senior Secondary Schools, jointly called Saints, is one of the schools known to be the home of Gambian athletes. The schools have over the years produced national athletes like Pa Halie Jammeh, Modou Sarr, alias such, and Fatou Tiyana.
Saints yesterday joine the school sports fraternity to stage its Inter-house competition featuring Red,Yellow, Blue and Green houses at the Independence Stadium in Bakau amid hundreds of students chanting to support their athletes.
Despite being suspended for two years by The Gambia Senior Secondary School Sports committee for indiscipline in the 2005 inter schools heats, Saints is still among the best and continues to produce promising athletes. Ansumana Sanyang a 100 and 200meters runner and Haddy Kujabi 400 and 800 meters distance runner were rated to be the best athletes at the school during yesterday's Inter-house competition.
John Kwokori, physical education teacher of St. Augustine Senior Secondary School, said the school will continue to produce outstanding athletes for the nation. He said, "Last year, we targeted to be among the first three in the national Inter-schools competition and we happened to emerge third. But this time around we are going all out to have the best result as we are more prepared."
Green house emerged first with 322 points followed by Red with 302, Blue with 287 and yellow with 256 respectively.
There was an exhibition race between The Gambia Senior Secondary School and Saints Athletes as part of cementing the two schools relationship.
The inter-house school competition sets the stage for the annual National inter-school Athletics championship which will take place later this year.
