Magistrate Bojang of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court recently convicted and sentenced one Lamin Manneh, following his own guilty plea on various traffic offences.

He was fined D2,500 on count one in default to serve two months in prison, on count two D2,500 in default to serve two months in prison, on count three D2,500, in default to serve two months in prison, and on count four D3,000, in default to serve three months in prison.

Lamin Manneh, who was convicted on charges of careless driving, unlicenced driving, dangerous driving and reckless and negligent act causing harm, was also ordered to pay compensation of D400,000.

In his plea of mitigation, defence counsel Moses Richards told the court that the convict was a truthful person, and had accepted the offences and causing injury.

He said the accused person could have denied all the charges, which could lead to a long and expensive trial. He, therefore, urged the court to exercise leniency in sentencing the convict.

The charge sheet on count one stated that on 23 September 2015, along Westfield-Tabakoto Highway in the Kanifing Municpality, he drove a taxi motor vehicle registration number BJL 8218 H, without due care and attention, and thereby caused an accident.

Count two stated that he drove the said motor vehicle without a driving lience.

Count three indicated that he drove the said motor vehicle in a dangerious manner to the other road users; and count four further stated that he drove the said motor vehicle in a reckless and negligent manner, which caused serious injury to one Mikali Secka of Bundung, aged 48 years.
