Defence opened recently in a rape case involving one Gibby Sowe at the Special Criminal Court in Banjul.

In his testimony, Sowe denied the allegation that he had had sex with the minor, although he admitted they are neighbours, but the victim was not even familiar with him.

“I have never raped the victim as alleged by her parents,” he stated, adding that according to the parents of the victim, the victim told them she was raped by him.

He added that there was nobody who could stand and say he or she saw him with the victim chatting in an isolated place, much more in his house, because the victim had never visited him in his house.

“I am living with people in the same house. If it had happened, those people would surely confirm it,” he testified, saying that all what was said in court against him were mere speculations with no iota of truth in them.

Even the medical doctor could not confirm the rape, he told the court: “I am innocent in this case.”

The case continues.
