Senegalese workers march

Some Senegalese workers took to the streets of Dakar on Tuesday to protest rising living costs and what unions describe as the government's failure to honour previous agreements, ahead of a planned 72-hour general strike set to begin on October 21.

Trade unions are demanding measures to improve wages, protect pensions and implement prior agreements reached with the state.

Local media quoted Sara Konaré, Secretary-General of Senegal's National Union of Petroleum and Gas Workers, as saying the mobilisation showed "growing unity" among unions, while accusing the authorities of failing to engage meaningfully.

The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Public Sector Reform, however, warned that participants in an "unlawful" strike risk salary deductions and disciplinary action, urging the unions to prioritise further negotiations over industrial action.

The planned strike threatens to disrupt public services if talks fail to break the deadlock in the coming days.
