D140,000 for countrywide wrestling tournament

The Ministry of Youth and Sports through the National Sports Council has provided D140,000 (One hundred and forty thousand Dalasis) for the revival of wrestling across the country. 

The National Sports Council (NSC) in a bid to revive the promotion and development of National Wrestling,  will organize a wrestling tournament countrywide scheduled to take place from February to May 2012, according to Mamudou Max Jallow, executive secretary of the NSC.

In a press release sent to Pointsport, Max said: “The Ministry of Youth and Sports, together with the Department of Youth and Sports, the National Sports Council and the Gambia Wrestling Association, has travelled nationwide to engage all stakeholders around the country to discuss with chiefs, Local Government officers, regional sports committees, Governors and Mayors on how to organize sustainable wrestling competitions for good.”

He said all Regional Sports Committees are requested to establish Wrestling Sports Committees to take charge of organizing the nationwide competitions from the village, ward, district and regional competitions. 

“This will be done in collaboration with wrestling associations and the National Sports Council to stage the first National Wrestling Championship for the best wrestlers in the country,” he said.

According to the release from the sports department, the district competition trophy would be named after the Chief Patron of all the National Sports Associations, His Excellency the President Sheikh Professor Dr. Alhagie Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh, on a grand final at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

The Development Officer of the NSC is currently on nationwide tour to strengthen the wrestling competition with presentation of D20,000 (Twenty thousand dalasis) to each region and municipality.

The final presentation and discussion with the stakeholders will take place at the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) on Wednesday 29 February and Thursday 1 March at Banjul City Council. 

‘The National Sports Council seeks maximum support of the general public to help revive wrestling which is our own National Sports,” the release added.
