Musa Mendy, a representative of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary School Education (MoBSE) has said that chess will be introduced to schools in the country in October 2014, as part of efforts at promoting and developing the discipline in The Gambia.
Mr Mendy made this announcement at the Gambia Secondary School Sports Association (GSSSA) press briefing held on 6 March 2014, at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, as part of preparations for the 2014 national inter-schools athletics championship set for this weekend in Farafenni in the North Bank Region.
He said chess is not a popular sporting discipline in the country, adding that the introduction of chess in schools in the country, come October 2014, will help to promote and develop the discipline in the country.
Mr Mendy further stated that individuals such as one Mr Prosperous are ready to sponsor national chess tournaments to develop chess, adding that the introduction of chess in Gambian schools would promote, develop, nurture and groom young talents.
