Almamy Kabele Camara, an Executive Member of Confederation of African Football (CAF), arrived in Banjul yesterday morning to represent Issa Hayatou, president of the continent’s biggest football body in tomorrow’s Extraordinary General Assembly of West African Football Union (WAFU), Pointsport can reveal.
Camara, who was received at the Banjul International Airport by the Gambia Football Association’s President Seedy Kinteh, told this reporter in an interview at the Ocean Bay Hotel in Cape Point yesterday that he is in Banjul to take part in the WAFU Extraordinary General Assembly meeting on behalf of Issa Hayatou.
“I came to Banjul to represent the Caf President and other members of the Executive,” Kabele said.
Camara used this golden opportunity to outline the importance attached to this weekend’s Wafu gathering giving the fact that it is an important zone for football development for Africa, which is why “Caf cannot sideline Wafu” because it is a vital and important organization in the continent.
He thanked the Gambian authorities including the Gambia Football Association for accepting to host what he referred to as important gathering and is optimistic that the deliberation that will be taking place will be in the right direction for football development in the region.
Mr Kabele could not conclude this interview without heaping praises on the Gambian people for the warm welcome accorded him.
“On behalf of Caf president Issa Hayatou, I would like to once again express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the entire Gambian people and the President of the Republic of The Gambia, Sheikh. Prof. Alh. Dr Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh, chief patron of the Gambia Football Association in particular for his constant support of football development not only in The Gambia but across the continent as a whole,” Kabele concluded.
Presidents of WAFU member countries numbering 16 are expected to gather at the Kairaba Beach Hotel to participate in tomorrow’s WAFU Extraordinary General Assembly in what promises to be a successful gathering.
